changetheratio: Here it is - the video for “Raise Your Cache” from last week’s incredible RaiseCache event for HackNY. Note the ratio. There now, that wasn’t hard, was it?  Very proud of this, the product of many zany hours by myself and my co-producer Phil Di Giulio, co-founder of FrameSocket, the vid platform embedded above (shout-out also to our Mixmaster David Pakman, who took my raw vocals...

Life of Joe: NYC Tech Blood Drive →
joeyevoli: This is the NYC Tech Blood Drive’s official announcement (click to sign up). The first drive will be Sept. 24th, 11am-5pm. It’s something I’ve organized with the help of the Red Cross, and fellow Techstars alumni Crowdtwist and Redrover. My plan is to make this a regularly occurring event…

The Daily Drip: Stop Panhandling your Ideas →
thenesvig: When most people see panhandlers on the side of the road, we condescendingly think “Why don’t they get a job? You’re not going to get anywhere begging for money. Get to work!” Yet, this is what so many people do with their ideas - they put their fate in the hands of passerby’s hoping someone…

Speakertext Launches!
From Techcrunch: One of the big problems with video on the Web is that other than the title, description and some meta tags, it is mostly invisible to Google and other search engines. One way to make video more SEO-friendly is to add transcriptions, but that can get expensive. An angel-funded startup called SpeakerText is (re)launching today with a very clever way...

Breakout Developments
Breakout Developments was my first company.  It’s first product was a failure, but my co-founder, Tyler Young, and I learned some very important lessons.  Mainly, never rely on one sole company for your product to exist.  It was an awesome experience however and sowed the seeds for my current life.   We set out to digitalize and legalize a modern version of the music mix tape....

The New Diary
I always wanted to keep a diary.  I’m a voracious reader of history and it doesn’t take a genius to realize that a lot of what we know today is due to what people have written down years ago.  The ones who write history are the ones who had the patience to take a moment and write down their thoughts. Diaries are important for another reason.  They preserve memories.  I for one...

THE SPEAKERCAVE
Reblogged from Matt Mireles’ The Metamorphosis: On June 1, 2010, I moved into the SpeakerCave. This wasn’t the plan A, mind you––more like plan C––but at least it was something. And definitely better than plan D, which is to say: SpeakerTent. The plan, well, plan A was to raise a bunch of money from the top angel investors in Silicon Valley and New York and then move to San Francisco....

Powerful Quote about Ayn Rand
I’m only 200 pages into Atlas Shrugged but loving every minute of it.  Found this powerful quote on Wikipedia (Originally from New York Times). “Both conservatives and liberals were unstinting in disparaging the book [Atlas Shrugged]; the right saw promotion of godlessness, and the left saw a message of greed is good. Rand is said to have cried every day as the reviews came...

Words to live by on Hacker News

I'm Joining SpeakerText
Funny the way the world works.  I recently contacted the SpeakerText CEO/Founder and blogging virtuoso Matt Mireles about Chris Dixon’s controversial post on a possible new tax rate to be imposed on money managers.  Next thing I know I’m in the #SpeakerCave getting amped up about SpeakerText 2.0 - set to be released later this summer. They're Made Out of Meat
A wonderful short Sci-Fi story that has made the rounds on the web.  Found out recently it is by Terry Bisson. THEY’RE MADE OUT OF MEAT “They’re made out of meat.” “Meat?” “Meat. They’re made out of meat.” “Meat?” “There’s no doubt about it. We picked up several from different parts of the planet, took them...

Barefoot Running Update
Image via Wikipedia Two weeks ago I went barefoot.  I bought Vibram Five Finger Shoes and have been using them off and on since.  I have heard that it can be tough on a foot used to the cushy embrace of a sneaker to all of a sudden dive into running unshod.  Since you’re arch and ankle have no support, muscles rarely used need to take up the slack.  I’m certainly feeling it.  And...

Momofuku Ssam Bar
Had a wonderful time Saturday night at Ssam Bar with AlexisFromTexas.  Here are her thoughts. alexisfromtexas: I did it. I officially crossed the line from distant David Chang fanboy, with a mere late night stop at Milk Bar under my belt, to actual consumer. I joined the crowds Saturday night and waited my turn for a seat at Ssam Bar. I was pleasantly surprised when the hostess ushered Scott...

Welcome Newcomers From Atomic Insights!
Welcome one and all.  I am quite familiar with the strength of the nuclear blogging community and understand that when Rod Adams posts a referral, it is sure to drive some traffic. Some of you may recognize me by my former handle ‘carletes.’ My first real ‘Hello World’ post can be found here.  It explains a bit of who I am and what I intend to use this blog for.  Although...

I've Gone Barefoot
I’m trying out Vibram’s Five Finger shoes.  Yes, they may make me look like a doofus but I’m loving them so far.   The idea is that the shoes provide no heel or arch support and therefore your body is encouraged to strike the ground with the forefront of your foot and not your heel.   Barefoot running really came into vogue with Daniel E. Lieberman’s recent paper.  The...

Deepwater Horizon Disaster and Nuclear Energy
Thought I’d reblog Albert Wenger’s post today and add my comments at the end. continuations: The Deepwater Horizon accident is a terrible lesson in not testing backup plans.  Yes, it is probably impossible to test the various way of trying to stop a well under exact conditions (i.e. with a gushing well), but the constant refrain of “this has not been tried at this depth” is...

Alexis From Texas: Last Vegan Pizza for 773 Miles →
heading to Texas with the AlexisFromTexas. As a Yankee, I’ve never been, but from what I hear of the food, I’ll be just fine. I head home for Memorial Day weekend this evening. I’m excited to see family and friends, but almost as excited for the food. So far we have pulled pork tacos, steaks, and BBQ on the weekend menu, but a stop at Reata in Fort Worth for my favorite Chicken...

Exercising My Brain
If the brain is to be a muscle then it must be exercised.  I am a very social person but feel that my actual social skills have not progressed a whole lot in the last six years or so.  This is why I am excited about Meetups Anywhere, and more specifically Fred Wilson’s avc meetups. I think of my social side as an inductor, which is reticent to change at first but then flows freely.  Another...

Breakout
I came out of college with a great mechanical engineering degree.  I went into engineering mainly because I like to play with Legos’s and thought, huh, this could be a good basis for whatever I want to do in the future.  Thankfully, I not only learned how to work hard, but also learned that there wasn’t much my left-brain couldn’t handle. I had an internship before my...

– Wine Drinking For Inspired Thinking by Michael J. Gelb Love this quote because it points out exactly what I am currently trying to do.  I know that when I write purely from my left-brain, aka ‘sober’, it’s boring and stilted.  When I can embrace a bit of my ‘drunk’...
