This ability is expressed in the writer’s motto “Write drunk, revise sober.”
“Write drunk” refers to the right-hemisphere generated process of letting go and free associating, exploring lots of ideas. “Revise sober” refers to the left-hemisphere challenge of editing, organizing, and implementing those ideas. If you write and revise sober, your work is boring and no one wants to read it. If you write and revise drunk, no one can read it.

Wine Drinking For Inspired Thinking by Michael J. Gelb Love this quote because it points out exactly what I am currently trying to do. I know that when I write purely from my left-brain, aka ‘sober’, it’s boring and stilted. When I can embrace a bit of my ‘drunk’ right-brain which free associates and explores a host of ideas my writing flows freely and is a lot more interesting. Although it certainly needs to be tempered a bit. |
